A Winning Weekend for the Ulster Ladies

Rockets came back fighting this weekend off an under par performance against DCU and Wildcats with victories over Brunell and Liffey Celtics. Saturday’s game was no doubt a challenge as this has been one of the best runs for Brunell in recent seasons.

This girls fought hard and narrowed the scoreline but it wasn’t until the dying seconds of the game when the home side courtesy of Mairead McNally went 2 ahead off two free throw shots. Brunell raced down the court and released the ball just as the buzzer sounded but the shot went wide of the rim. Man of the match had to go for the fantastic performance from Helena Fairbairn who scored 16 points.

Today’s game saw Rockets match up against South Dublin side, Liffey Celtics under new coach, Vinnie O’Keefe. The Dublin girls were a powerful force and their three point attempts at the basket were successful. Rockets only managed to bring the gap back to ten in parts of the first half meaning Liffey were up 28-42 at half time.

Power was restored to the Rockets in the second half and they closed the gap to 4 to end the third quarter. But foul trouble on both sides allowed the Rockets to come right back and the score was tied at 61-61 with 45 seconds. Once again 2 free throws sealed the game for the home side and final score was 63-61

Rockets face a third double header weekend when they play Limerick and Glanmire on Feb 1 and 2.
